Pablo & Bertollo Beets

Hi and welcome to the latest newsletter from our very special market garden, at Canara Farm, Mylor. Today Pete will be talking about the beetroot currently in season.

'' We have two varieties here at Canara and they are Pablo and Bertollo beetroot. Both types are very nice, baby beet they will grow to a golf ball size, and they reach tennis ball size when grown to a main size crop.

Our first sowing consists of four and a half beds across the patch, we've done a second sowing, with more in the nursery waiting to be planted. ''

" We plant our beets in three lines on a raised bed, this is done on a module planter with a tractor. We sow 2 to 3 seeds into each cell, this is known as multi-sewing and as a result you can quite often get 3-4 come up.

We look at each bunch individually, we then take some of the bigger ones out and leave the others to grow on. Unlike the salad onions, we don't really pull the whole bunch, instead you can just go along and pick the ones which are ready again increasing our harvest window. ''

" We have some nice well established beets available, which will be arriving into the depot tonight, we will then have a succession of beetroot right the way through to the end of August, all being well. "
