Scallions & Spring Onions

Hi and welcome to the latest blog from our very special market garden, at Canara Farm, Mylor. We hope you enjoyed our previous feature about various varieties of lettuce at the farm. Today Pete will be talking about spring onions which are now in season.

'' Scallions and Spring Onions can come from the same planting. The difference between them is how mature the plant becomes and their harvest period. Scallions are essentially a very young spring onion and are harvested early. These were ready at the beginning of July. ''

" We had our first planting of salad onions in June followed by another after raising additional seedlings in the nursery. We should have a continual supply from now until to the end of August. ''

'' The salad onions are multi-sown in a module of between 6 to 8 onions. Module growing makes harvesting really simple for us because you've already got a ready made bunch. If the bunch grows well all that's left for us to do is to pull up the bunch, shake the soil off the roots and band it up. ''

We hope you have enjoyed reading about the spring onion at the Farm. See you soon.
